PBIS Positive Behavior Interventions and Support
The middle school is designed to be a caring community dedicated to the guidance and education of young adolescents. The principles of respect and responsibility are foundational beliefs that should motivate all interactions within the school community. When students feel valued, respected and welcomed in their classroom, they are more likely to behave better and demonstrate respect towards their teachers, classmates and others. To that end, the Clinton Middle School community has been involved in implementing a systematic school-wide behavior management support system, which creates a welcoming climate that is physically and psychologically safe for all.
PBIS, Positive Behavior Interventions and Support is a program that encourages expected behavior, discourages inappropriate behavior and monitors and evaluates progress. Our program here at CMS emphasizes regular predictable positive learning and teaching environments, positive adult and peer models as well as regular positive reinforcement for academic, social development and success.
We have put in place a PBIS leadership team that meets monthly to:
- Monitor progress within the building
- Secure school-wide agreements and supports
- Establish data based action plan
- Arrange for high fidelity implementation
- Conduct formative data-based monitoring
This program has a learning curve for both teachers and students. In order to promote appropriate classroom behaviors they must learn how to respond to appropriate behaviors with:
- Praising and rewarding
- Signaling and modeling correct behavior
- Managing consistently
- Stopping inappropriate behavior quickly
Clinton Middle School’s goal is that the students will be self managers or “GAELS” throughout the day by following the school rules.
As a Clinton Middle School student I will:
- Get Ready
- Act Responsibly
- Expect Excellence
- Learn to Lead
- Show Respect
The end result is that our school is a safe and positive place for students and teachers. The program is designed to assist us in improving academic and behavioral outcomes.
We look forward to a great school year and believe PBIS will help us move forward in a positive direction for ALL students and staff.
